Misuse of Power
May 10, 2009 (Baseball Musings delivered by Newstex ) --

The Brewers fell to the Cubs Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-2. Milwaukees hitters put up a strange stat line, at least one that looks like it should have produced more than two runs. They were six for 33, which is a terrible batting average, but five of the six hits went for extra bases. Add to that six walks they drew, and they put enough men on base that one might expect the power to drive home some runs.

None of the walks, however, preceded the extra base hits, so the power was setting up scoring opportunities, not finishing them. So when the Brewers went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position, they thwarted their scoring opportunities set up by the long hits.

This hasnt been true all year, as the Brewers came into the game with better numbers with runners in scoring position than their overall averages.
