Milwaukee Brewers Roster Report 2009-05-06
The Brewers' starting pitching, which figured to be a weak spot at the start of the season, actually has been solid. The Brewers have 15 quality starts, ranking among the best rotations in the majors. The hitting, however, has been sporadic at best. Too many hitters are struggling, including SS J.J. Hardy, C Jason Kendall and 1B Prince Fielder. The Brewers remain too reliant on home runs to score, making it difficult to win games when they don't hit the long ball.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Bill Hall did not play Tuesday due to a slight strain of his right hamstring. Hall said he only expected to miss one game and planned to be back in the lineup Wednesday in Cincinnati. Hall tweaked the hamstring making a diving catch in left field Monday while filling in for injured LF Ryan Braun.

--LF Ryan Braun was back in the starting lineup Tuesday for the first time since Friday. Braun missed three starts while experiencing discomfort in his back, but an MRI showed no structural damage, and Braun said he planned to play through it.

--RHP Carlos Villanueva closed the Brewers' 8-5 victory in Pittsburgh on because manager Ken Macha didn't want to use RHP Trevor Hoffman three games in a row after he missed most of spring training with an oblique strain. Villanueva, who has had an up-and-down season, pitched a perfect ninth to record his third save in six chances.

MEDICAL WATCH:

3B Bill Hall (right hamstring cramps) left the May 4 game, and he didn't play May 5. He is day-to-day.

LF Ryan Braun (back tightness) didn't play May 2-4. He returned to the lineup May 5.

C Mike Rivera (sprained left ankle) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29.

RHP David Riske (right elbow tightness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 10. He will attempt to rehab the elbow through mid-May, but if he is unsuccessful, he might need Tommy John surgery.
