--RHP Trevor Hoffman made his first appearance for the Brewers after being activated Sunday from the disabled list. Hoffman, who was out with an oblique strain, did not pitch in a save situation. The Brewers scored five times in the bottom of the eighth for a 10-5 lead but Hoffman already was warmed up and said he wanted to pitch.

--OF Brad Nelson struck out with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth inning against the Pirates and now is 0-for-9 as a pinch-hitter. Overall, Nelson is hitless in 13 at-bats this season after winning a job on the Brewers' bench with a big spring.

--RHP Braden Looper tied a career high with seven strikeouts against the Pirates on Monday night. But Looper struggled with his command and departed after five innings, having allowed six hits, four walks and three runs (two earned). "I could tell from my bullpen (session) that it was one of those days that was going to be tough," said Looper. "I just couldn't get the ball down. I was able to make a few pitches and minimize the damage a little bit."

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP David Riske (right elbow tightness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 10. He will attempt to rehab the elbow through mid-May, but if he is unsuccessful, he might need Tommy John surgery.
