--RHP Yovani Gallardo's three-run home run off Arizona LHP Randy Johnson in the fifth inning Wednesday was the third longball of his big-league career. Gallardo hit two over an 11-day span in August 2007, off Arizona LHP Doug Davis and Pittsburgh RHP Tony Armas.

--RF Corey Hart was incorrect when he told reporters Tuesday he had never batted second as a professional player before that day. He had six starts in that spot for the Brewers in 2005 and five starts (seven games overall) in 2007.

--RHP Jeff Suppan, who allowed six runs in four innings Tuesday in a 10-6 loss to the Giants, fell to 0-2 with a 8.55 ERA in four career opening-day starts. In 20 innings in those starts, he has allowed 10 home runs.

--RHP Carlos Villanueva made a successful debut as the Brewers' interim closer Wednesday night by pitching a perfect ninth inning, with two strikeouts, in a 4-2 victory over the Giants. Villanueva was tabbed by manager Ken Macha to do the closing while all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman is out with an oblique strain.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Trevor Hoffman (right oblique strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He was merely playing long-toss as of April 8 and had no timetable for his return to action.

INF Craig Counsell (torn meniscus in right knee) opted not to have arthroscopic surgery and will remain on the active roster.
