Milwaukee Brewers Roster Report 2009-04-07

Milwaukee Brewers Roster Report 2009-04-07
RHP Trevor Hoffman was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with a right oblique strain. In his absence, RHP Carlos Villanueva probably will handle closing duties. OF Tony Gwynn Jr. was placed on outright waivers and cleared, then was sent to Class AAA Nashville. That means OF Chris Duffy won a bench job. And 3B Mike Lamb was released, with INF Casey McGehee claiming that reserve role.

PLAYER NOTES:

--2B Rickie Weeks, who batted .234 last season, spent much of the spring working with hitting coach Dale Sveum on some mechanical adjustments in his swing. Weeks gained momentum as the exhibition season progressed, finishing with a .312 average and a .424 on-base percentage.

--RHP David Riske, coming off elbow surgery last September, struggled throughout his 11 relief outings during exhibition season. Riske compiled an 8.25 ERA and allowed 23 hits in 12 innings. He reported his elbow was healthy, however, and he was kept on the active roster.

--RHP Dave Bush, who makes his first start Saturday against the Cubs, will be ready to pitch an inning out of the bullpen if needed Tuesday when the Brewers open their season in San Francisco. Bush's regular day to pitch was Monday, but the team was off and he didn't want to use simulated action as his final tune-up.

--LF Ryan Braun accumulated only 25 at-bats with the Brewers during exhibition play due to his time spent with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic as well as tightness in his right intercostal area and a bruised thumb. Braun batted .280 with one homer and four RBIs but swung the bat well in the final two exhibition games. He said he was "locked in" for the season.

--RHP Braden Looper rejoined the Brewers on Monday after staying behind in Arizona to pitch in a minor league intrasquad game Sunday. Looper, playing catch-up after missing his first few spring starts with an oblique strain, is scheduled to make his debut for the Brewers on Friday in the home opener against Chicago.
