--3B Mat Gamel, one of the organization's top prospects, also was unavailable to play because of a shoulder impingement. Gamel left camp Feb. 27 to return home for the birth of his first child.
--RHP Eric Gagne, who signed a minor league deal after camp had begun, was placed on a throwing program to allow him to ease into his workload. Gagne was not allowed to pitch in a game during the first week of exhibition season.
--INF Craig Counsell, at the suggestion of hitting coach Dale Sveum, lowered his hands in his batting stance this spring. The change was working early, as Counsell collected five hits in his first six at-bats in exhibition play.
--RHP David Riske, who had surgery to remove a bone spur in his elbow last September, was being brought along slowly on a throwing program at the outset of spring training. Riske did not pitch during the first week of exhibition play but was getting closer to being ready for game action.
--C/INF Brett Lawrie, the Brewers' first-round draft pick last year out of British Columbia, has become a second baseman, at his request. Lawrie's work at second base in minor league camp was interrupted when he joined Team Canada for the World Baseball Classic.
