--OF Tony Gwynn Jr. might miss most of spring training with a right shoulder impingement. He will throw on Feb. 26 before a final determination is made. "It's going to be a while on his shoulder. The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous," manager Ken Macha said.

--RHP Luis Pena was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners. The Brewers designated Pena for assignment after claiming RHP Nick Green on waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Green is a starter, and the Brewers wanted depth in that area.

--C Vinny Rottino cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Class AAA Nashville. Rottino was placed on waivers after the Brewers signed free agent RHP Braden Looper. Rottino remained in the Brewers' camp as a non-roster player.

--RHP Eric Gagne signed a minor league deal after camp opened and will try to make the bullpen as a set-up man after failing as the Brewers' closer last year. If he is added to the roster by March 25, he will get a $1.5 million salary for 2009.

--3B Mat Gamel reported to camp with an impingement in his right shoulder and was restricted from throwing. Gamel is the organization's top third base prospect and was expected to get extra work at the position in camp with 3B Bill Hall sidelined with a calf injury.

--RHP Ramiro Mendoza failed his physical exam and left camp. Mendoza, who had been out of the majors for a few years, had hip surgery in the interim, and team doctors were wary of that situation. Mendoza was invited to camp as a non-roster player after working out for the Brewers in Florida.

--RF Corey Hart avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a salary of $3.25 million, the midpoint of figures filed by the sides. The settlement came the day before Hart's hearing was scheduled.

BY THE NUMBERS: 0 -- Arbitration cases that have gone to a hearing for the Brewers since Doug Melvin became general manager in September 2002.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Obviously, that's a great memory. It's kind of great to have it immortalized like that. That was a great day and a lot of fun." -- LF Ryan Braun, pictured on the cover of the team's 2009 media guide rounding first base with an arm upraised after hitting a decisive two-run homer against the Cubs on the final day of the season, helping the Brewers claim the NL wild card spot.
