Milwaukee Brewers Notes, Quotes 2008-12-19

--OF Trot Nixon signed a minor league contract and received an invitation to the Brewers' spring training camp. Nixon was injured much of 2008 and appeared in only 11 games with the Mets, batting .171 with one homer and one RBI. Nixon is a career .274 hitter with 137 homers and 555 RBIs in 1,092 games, mostly with Boston.

--CF Chris Duffy signed a minor league contract and received an invitation to the Brewers' spring camp. Duffy played parts of three seasons with Pittsburgh from 2005-07 but spent last year in the Pirates' farm system while recovering from shoulder surgery.

--LHP Chris Capuano signed a minor league deal with an invitation to the Brewers' spring camp. Capuano, 30, sat out the 2008 season after undergoing his second Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery of the year. He is currently participating in a throwing program with hopes of returning to action shortly after the 2009 season begins. The plan is for Capuano to go to the minors and pitch himself back into shape so he would be ready should the Brewers need help. He will get a $500,000 salary with a chance to make another $2.8 million in incentives.

--OF Gabe Kapler, who played a key role off the bench during the 2008 season before becoming a free agent, has talked with Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, but no contract offer has been made. Melvin said Kapler might get better opportunities elsewhere.

--RHP Ben Sheets has yet to sign with another club as a free agent. The Brewers haven't completely shut the door on making Sheets an offer but do not plan to do so at this time. Sheets is looking for a multiyear deal and has drawn interest from the Rangers and Yankees.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9 -- Non-roster players who have been invited to the Brewers' spring training camp.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We know he's a great worker and is dedicated to returning, so hopefully by the latter part of May he is ready to roll." -- Assistant general manager Gord Ash, on the expected return of LHP Chris Capuano from elbow surgery.
