--1B Scott Thorman signed a minor league deal with the Brewers and was invited to spring training. Thorman, 26, hit .251 with 19 homers and 56 RBIs this year for the Braves' Class AAA affiliate. He hit a combined .222 for Atlanta in 2006 and 2007.

--LHP R.J. Swindle signed a major league contract with the Brewers for 2009. Swindle, 25, spent most of the 2008 season pitching in Philadelphia's farm system, where he was 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA in 38 games, with eight walks and 67 strikeouts in 53 innings.

--INF/OF Jason Bourgeois signed a minor league contract with an invitation to the Brewers' spring training. Bourgeois, 26, spent most of the 2008 season with the Chicago White Sox's Class AAA Charlotte affiliate, batting .286 with 23 doubles, five triples, nine homers and 48 RBIs. He saw action in six games with Chicago, going 1-for-3.

--The Brewers promoted two of their scouts to cross-checker positions, with Doug Reynolds taking over on the East Coast and Corey Rodriguez on the West Coast. Rodriguez replaces Bruce Seid, who was elevated to director of amateur scouting when Jack Zduriencik left to become Seattle's general manager. Reynolds replaces Tom McNamara, who joined Zduriencik in Seattle.

--OF Lorenzo Cain, one of the Brewers' top prospects, made a good showing in the Arizona Fall League. In 18 games with the Peoria Javelinas, Cain batted .333 with five home runs, 11 RBIs and a 1.017 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

--C Lou Palmisano, who missed most of the 2008 minor league season after undergoing knee surgery, made up for some of that lost time with a good showing in the Arizona Fall League. In 16 games, Palmisano batted .370 with two homers, nine RBI and a 1.034 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

BY THE NUMBERS: 4 -- Openings on the Brewers' 40-man roster after LHP R.J. Swindle was signed to a 2009 contract.
