--RHP Ben Sheets has a torn muscle near his pitching elbow and won't pitch again this season. Sheets is set to become a free agent after the season.
--RHP Carlos Villanueva spearheaded a strong relief effort in Game 1 by retiring all seven batters he faced. Villanueva struck out the final three hitters he faced. "I threw more fastballs today because they saw me a couple of times earlier this year," he said. "I didn't want them sitting on my off-speed pitches. I had good command today and was able to keep them off-balance." --1B Prince Fielder made 17 errors during the 2008 season, second only to Philadelphia 1B Ryan Howard. Thus, the two most error-prone first basemen are playing in the NLDS between the Brewers and Phillies.
--LHP Manny Parra, who pitched primarily as a starter during the season, pitched out of the bullpen in Game 1. With so many left-handed hitters in Philadelphia's lineup, interim manager Dale Sveum has three lefties in the pen -- Parra, Brian Shouse and Mitch Stetter, who also pitched in Game 1.
--RHP Yovani Gallardo became only the second pitcher in major league history to start a postseason game after going 0-0 during the regular season. The Tigers' Virgil Trucks did it in Games 2 and 6 of the 1945 World Series against the Cubs. Gallardo missed most of the season with a knee injury.
--The Brewers won 28 games during the regular season in their final at-bat, the highest total in the majors. They also went 28-17 (.622) in one-run games, the best winning percentage in the majors.
BY THE NUMBERS: 4 -- Starts made in the regular season by RHP Yovani Gallardo before starting Game 1 of the NLDS vs. Philadelphia.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We have running jokes about his approach to hitting. He's a poor man's Vladimir Guerrero (a known free-swinger). He's ready to hit. That's the easiest way to put it." -- Interim manager Dale Sveum, referring to free-swinging RF Corey Hart.
