The Brewers have attempted squeeze bunts four times this season. On three of those occasions, the hitter missed the sign completely.
What's going on, you ask? "It's the only sign we've missed all year," third base coach Dale Sveum said. "And you only have to look for one thing. You tell me."
The latest culprit was right-hander Ben Sheets, who missed the squeeze sign Tuesday in the sixth inning against St. Louis. With Craig Counsell breaking from third, Sheets swung away and fouled off the pitch.
"I thought I had a better chance of driving him in with a hit," joked Sheets, a .083 hitter.
Catcher Jason Kendall and right-hander Jeff Suppan were the others who missed the squeeze sign while batting. The only successful "squeezer" was right-hander Carlos Villanueva, who bunted home Prince Fielder on April 26 against Florida.
"What can I say?" Villanueva said. "I know the sign."
