Barring the unforeseen, Trevor Hoffman could be closing games for the Brewers before their three-city, nine-game trip is over.

Hoffman, sidelined since mid-March with an oblique strain, will throw his second bullpen session Saturday before the Brewers take on the Mets at Citi Field. If all goes well, he will join Class AAA Nashville in Memphis and pitch an inning Tuesday and Friday.

Barring a setback in those assignments, Hoffman will rejoin the Brewers and be activated next weekend in Houston.

"My last bullpen (session) went well," said Hoffman. "They want to put me in a game situation. A simulated situation would be lacking in game speed and intensity."

Hoffman said the key at this point is not to get too giddy in the final stages of his rehabilitation program.

"They wanted to be a little cautious," said Hoffman, who signed a $6 million free-agent deal over the winter. "I'm not terribly patient. Fortunately, the bulk of (the games missed) was in spring training. We've had to take this day by day, according to how I feel.

"It's been tough. New ball club, the expectations coming in, wanting to help out. Hopefully, I can provide some stability."

METS 5, BREWERS 4: The Brewers began a three-city, nine-game trip in frustrating fashion when Luis Castillo's two-out, run-scoring infield hit gave the Mets a victory in the bottom of the ninth. RHP Dave Bush put the Brewers in a three-run hole in the first inning but bounced back with five shutout innings after that hiccup. LF Ryan Braun put the Brewers on top, 4-3, with his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the sixth off RHP Livan Hernandez, to quell the fears of those worried about his power drought. But LHP Mitch Stetter surrendered career home run No. 500 to Gary Sheffield in the seventh, allowing the Mets to pull even.
