Milwaukee Brewers Inside Pitch 2009-04-15

Milwaukee Brewers Inside Pitch 2009-04-15
The first time manager Ken Macha summoned Todd Coffey from the bullpen during exhibition season, he was taken aback.

"I didn't realize he did that," Macha said.

"That" is sprint as fast as he can from the bullpen, every time Coffey enters a game. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound right-hander has been doing that ever since he tried it one night while pitching for Class AA Chattanooga in Cincinnati's farm system in 2004.

"I got real 'jacked up' for the game," Coffey recalled. "We had just taken the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a grand slam. I was all excited and ran in and got after it. I've been doing it ever since."

When Coffey ran to the mound for the first time during spring camp, Macha asked him, "Should I stand here a couple more minutes so you can catch your breath?"

Whatever Coffey's doing, it sure is working. In 13 appearances since he was claimed off waivers last September from the Reds, he has not allowed a run in 11 2/3 innings.

"I know (Macha) wasn't expecting it," Coffey said of his mad dash from the 'pen. "I like doing it. It gets the blood pumping. The only place I won't do it is Colorado, because of the thin air."

REDS 6, BREWERS 1: The Brewers are completely out of sync, which is why they lost their fourth game in a row. Their pitchers continue to issue too many costly walks, and the offense has been too sporadic. LHP Manny Parra allowed only three hits over six innings but issued four walks, two of which led to runs. The big blow was a two-run homer by Jerry Hairston Jr., who had one hit in 11 at-bats entering the game. The only damage the Brewers could do to Reds starter Bronson Arroyo came on SS J.J. Hardy's one-out homer in the second inning. It's the first time the Brewers have lost their first two home series of the season since 2003.
