Manager Ken Macha said Monday he wanted to give struggling right-hander Jeff Suppan a day to collect his thoughts before discussing his latest debacle.

Suppan lost command of his pitches Sunday night, walking in three runs during a nightmarish fourth inning in a 8-5 loss to the Cubs. Through two starts, Suppan is 0-2 with a 12.91 ERA.

"I'll probably sit down and talk to him (Tuesday) before he throws his side (session)," Macha said.

"I looked at some numbers and he had nine out of 20 first-pitch strikes. If you're a command pitcher, which he is, that's a little low. Once you get behind in the count and you don't have that blazing fastball, then he's doing what he did (Sunday). He was missing his pitch.

"He was trying to sink it or cut it and stay on the edges of the strike zone. He wasn't throwing strikes."

Suppan covered only 7 2/3 innings in his first two starts, forcing Macha to use too many relievers.

"It's definitely a strain on the bullpen," said Macha. "I'd like to see all our starters get out there six innings. Not only does it have an impact on wins and losses that day, it also has a residual effect, carrying over.

"We'll sit down and talk, see how he's doing, and hopefully we'll get him back to how he pitched last year in August."

Suppan went 5-0 with a 3.00 ERA last August but has not won a game since, going 0-6 with a 10.13 ERA in eight starts, including the playoff-eliminating loss to Philadelphia in Game 4 of the NLDS.

REDS 7, BREWERS 6: Oh, those bases on balls. One night after RHP Jeff Suppan walked in three runs in a loss to the Cubs, RHP Yovani Gallardo got himself in trouble with three walks and a hit batter in Cincinnati's decisive six-run rally in the third inning. Reds 3B Edwin Encarnacion capped the outburst with a grand slam, but it never would have come to that had Gallardo not lost his command that inning. Gallardo allowed only three hits in five innings but was charged with seven runs, in large part because he walked four and hit Jay Bruce with a pitch with the bases loaded.
