Carlos Villanueva knew he wasn't going to be perfect as the interim closer in place of injured Trevor Hoffman (oblique strain). He just hoped to avoid failure so soon.

After converting his first save opportunity in the season-opening series in San Francisco, Villanueva wasn't as fortunate Saturday night against the rival Chicago Cubs at home. Given a 5-4 lead in the ninth, Villanueva surrendered a two-run homer to Alfonso Soriano that propelled the Cubs to a 6-5 victory.

"I knew I wasn't going to be perfect every time out," said a disappointed Villanueva. "It happens. I have to leave it here when I walk out the door."

It is Villanueva's first chance at closing games. Early last season, he was converted from a starting pitcher to reliever and eventually evolved into a setup man.

Because he isn't overpowering and doesn't have a signature "out" pitch, Villanueva must hit his spots. He missed badly with a fastball to Soriano, who launched it far over the left field wall at Miller Park.

"Tomorrow's another day and we can't have any carry-over because they might need me again and I'll be there," said Villanueva.

CUBS 8, BREWERS 5: RHP Jeff Suppan and the Brewers made it easy for the Cubs by walking 10 batters, including four in the fourth inning with the bases loaded, which tied a major league record. Suppan issued three of those bases-full walks and was charged with five runs in 3 2/3 innings despite allowing only two hits. Suppan now is 0-2 with a 12.91 ERA in two starts this season. Going back to the beginning of last September, he is 0-6 with a 10.13 ERA over eight starts. Despite all that madness, the Brewers still had a chance to draw even in the fifth inning, but Cubs RF Reed Johnson reached over the wall to rob Prince Fielder of a grand slam. That proved to be the pivotal play of the game as the Cubs took two of three from the Brewers.
