Milwaukee Brewers Inside Pitch 2008-11-29

Milwaukee Brewers Inside Pitch 2008-11-29
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin had plans to spend the long Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago with his family.

He didn't expect to conduct much business, if any.

All was quiet on the CC Sabathia front as the holiday rolled around. Melvin spoke briefly on the telephone with Greg Genske, the lead agent for Sabathia, but little information was exchanged.

"I just wanted to touch base," Melvin said.

Melvin still wasn't sure if any team other than the Brewers and Yankees had made concrete offers to Sabathia, who pitched Milwaukee to its first playoff berth in 26 years after coming from Cleveland in an early-July trade.

The Brewers started the bidding with a five-year offer for $100 million. The Yankees blew that away with a six-year, $140 million offer, but Sabathia showed no inclination to accept either bid.

There were reports that the Los Angeles Angels were going to jump in on Sabathia, but they seemed more interested in chasing first baseman Mark Teixeira. The Dodgers and Giants supposedly had interest, as well but there were no reports of offers coming from those clubs.

Any California team making a serious offer would become the favorite to land Sabathia because he hails from Vallejo, near San Francisco, and has confided to friends he'd like to play near home.

Melvin still believes only four or five teams, at the most, will make concrete offers for Sabathia because of the cost involved and concerns about the declining economy.

"It's like a poker game and everybody's holding their cards close to the vest," Melvin said. "It's hard to read."

Melvin said Sabathia is the only free agent who played for the Brewers in 2008 whom he has offered a new contract. Teams have a Dec. 1 deadline to offer salary arbitration to their own free agents to keep draft-pick compensation in order.

Sabathia is a Class A free agent, and the Brewers definitely will offer him arbitration.
