Milwaukee Brewers Inside Pitch 2008-08-30
It seems as if the Chicago Cubs win every day -- and they almost do.

The Cubs had another victory on the board Friday before the Brewers even took the field in Pittsburgh. The Brewers' chances of catching the Cubs seem slim, but they have a nice cushion in the wild-card race.

Manager Ned Yost said his team can't worry about what the Cubs do.

"They're playing great," said Yost. "They really are. That's all right. You just keep plugging along. That's why you worry about yourself, not anything else or what anybody else does.

"I don't worry about the Cubs. It has nothing to do with winning the division or anything else. They're playing great right now. But so are we. You just keep plugging along, see where it all ends up."

When asked if the Brewers needed to keep beating Pittsburgh because the Cubs went 14-4 against the Pirates, Yost said, "I think we need to try to win today. That's as far as my concern goes over anything."

BREWERS 3, PIRATES 1: The Brewers scored three runs before making an out. Then they made 27 outs without scoring another run. That proved to be enough, thanks to starter Dave Bush's strong work (6 2/3 innings, one run), a nice effort from the bullpen and a couple of run-saving defensive plays. Ryan Braun's three-run homer in the first off lefty Tom Gorzelanny was all the scoring the Brewers managed. But Bush and relievers Brian Shouse, Eric Gagne and Salomon Torres (26th save) kept the Pirates in check. It was the Brewers' ninth victory in 10 meetings with the Pirates this year.
