GAME REPORT METS 5, BREWERS 4
INSIDE PITCH

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Mets third baseman David Wright made only one out in five trips to the plate and also turned in a defensive gem in the third to prevent a Brewers rally. Wright singled twice, walked twice and scored a run.

TURNING POINT

Pinch hitter Gary Sheffield won a nine-pitch duel with reliever Mitch Stetter leading off the seventh, finally socking his 500th career homer to tie the score, 4-4. The Brewers dodged a bullet in the eighth inning before the Mets finally won in the ninth on Luis Castillo's run-scoring infield hit.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE

* Before the game, the Mets placed catcher Brian Schneider on the 15-day disabled list with a muscle strain in his back. To replace him on their roster, the Mets purchased the contract of catcher Omir Santos from Class AAA Buffalo.

* Backup catcher Mike Rivera had another nice night at the plate but made a base-running mistake after doubling with one down in the seventh. Rivera broke for third on pinch hitter Chris Duffy's grounder to short and was an easy out.

* From the second through fifth innings, Brewers starter Dave Bush faced two more than the minimum number of hitters. Wright singled with two down in the second but was thrown out trying to steal. Wright walked with two down in the fifth.

CLUBHOUSE CONFIDENTIAL

Shortstop J.J. Hardy was back in the lineup after missing the game Wednesday with mid-back stiffness. Hardy said his back felt so bad Thursday after the plane ride from Milwaukee that he thought he'd have to sit out again. "It scared me," Hardy said. "After I got off the plane, I didn't like the way it felt. I was worried about it. But I woke up this morning and it felt much better."

STATITUDES

* Reliever Todd Coffey had to work out of a big jam in the eighth inning but kept alive his scoreless streak since signing with the Brewers last September. In 15 appearances covering 14 1/3 innings, Coffey has not allowed a run.

* Sheffield became the 25th player in major-league history to hit 500 career homers with his lead-off shot to left in the seventh. Sheffield is the first player to hit his 500th homer while playing for the Mets.

* With a three-run homer Thursday against San Diego, Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado became the 49th player in major-league history to reach 1,500 RBI for his career. The blast gave Delgado 1,501 RBI. Mickey Mantle is 48th on the list with 1,509 RBI.
