MILWAUKEE (AP) - Pitcher Chris Capuano stayed with the Milwaukee Brewers, agreeing to a minor league contract Tuesday after the team let him go last week.
The left-hander became a free agent when Milwaukee failed to offer a contract by Friday's deadline. That got him off the 40-man roster.Capuano missed last season after injuring his pitching elbow in an exhibition game in March. The 30-year-old decided to try rehabilitation but later had a second elbow-ligament replacement surgery and never returned to play.
Capuano won 18 games in 2005 and made the NL All-Star team in 2006. He started 5-0 in 2007 but lost his last 12 decisions.
He would get a $500,000, one-year contract if added to the major league roster and could make $2,825,000 in performance bonuses, $1.2 million based on innings from 60 to 200, and $1,625,000 based on starts from five to 30.
Capuano had a $3.75 million salary last season.
