BREWERS Top prospects sign for '09
The Milwaukee Brewers announced the signings Thursday of seven of their minor-leaguers to contracts for 2009.

Agreeing to terms were relievers Tim Dillard and Mitch Stetter, shortstop Alcides Escobar, third baseman Mat Gamel, third baseman Casey McGehee, first baseman/outfielder Brad Nelson and catcher Angel Salome.

Of that group, Stetter probably has the best chance of making the big-club in spring training. With Brian Shouse still out on the free-agent market, Stetter, 28, is in line to become the Brewers' left-handed relief specialist. He spent three stints in the majors last year, going 3-1 with a 3.20 earned run average in 30 appearances.

Dillard also has a shot if he pitches well in camp. The 25-year-old right-hander had a 4.40 ERA in two stints with the Brewers last season.

Escobar and Gamel, the top-ranked prospects in the system, probably will form the left side of the infield at Class AAA Nashville to open the '09 season. McGehee also is in that picture after performing well at the Class AAA level for the Chicago Cubs last year. Salome is expected to be Nashville's starting catcher.

Nelson, who had some decent at-bats as a call-up last September, when he hit .286, will get a shot to be a left-handed hitter off the bench.
