MILWAUKEE (AP) - Right fielder Corey Hart and the Milwaukee Brewers agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract and avoided a salary arbitration hearing. |
The 26-year-old Hart made his first All-Star team last season but slumped badly down the stretch. He finished hitting .268 with 20 homers and 91 RBIs while making $444,000.
He asked for $3.8 million this season while the club offered $2.7 million. As recently as this weekend the team said the two sides remained far apart.
Milwaukee previously avoided arbitration with right-hander Dave Bush, shortstop J.J. Hardy, right-hander Seth McClung, second baseman Rickie Weeks and first baseman Prince Fielder.
Fielder was the lone multiyear deal, agreeing to an $18 million, two-year contract.
Doug Melvin has never had a case reach an arbitration hearing since taking over as Milwaukee's general manager in 2002.
